The Challenge

Our client, a globally recognized electric vehicle manufacturer, operates a battery warranty replacement program in Taiwan, requiring a reverse logistics solution to collect used and damaged battery packs from vehicle owners and transport them safely to repair and refurbishment facilities across the country.

The logistics requirements of this program presented significant barriers. Used damaged batteries are classified as Class 9 Dangerous Goods, carrying a substantially higher risk of spontaneous combustion than new units, and once ignited, lithium battery fires are exceptionally difficult to suppress. Each battery unit weighed between 1.5 and 1.8 metric tons, with wooden packaging crates exceeding 200 centimeters in length. The weight and handling demands meant crate damage during movement was a routine occurrence. Given these conditions, virtually every warehousing provider in Taiwan declined to take on the cargo, citing the risk of a fire destroying their entire facility. The client required a logistics partner with both the technical capability to manage dangerous goods operations and the organizational commitment to take on the associated risk.

The Solution

After a thorough internal assessment, the Morrison Express management team concluded that the long-term value of supporting a high-profile brand outweighed the operational risk, provided the right safeguards were in place. Morrison accepted the assignment and established a dedicated operational framework from the ground up.

Dedicated Dangerous Goods Storage

A designated storage zone was established at our Guanyin, Taoyuan warehouse, equipped with smoke detection systems, remote APP-based monitoring, 24-hour security personnel, and scheduled fire-response drills. This controlled environment ensures full regulatory compliance and provides the client with continuous visibility over battery storage conditions.

On-Site Crate Repair Capability

Given the weight of each battery unit, crate damage during handling is unavoidable. Morrison maintains a dedicated team of technicians available to repair damaged wooden crates on-site at any time, ensuring every outbound shipment meets the structural integrity required for safe road transport before it leaves the warehouse.

Specialized Heavy-Load Transport All battery movements are executed using air-ride side-unloading trucks, designed to handle the weight and dimensional specifications of each unit. Each vehicle carries four to five battery packs, with a combined cargo value exceeding TWD 10 million, and operates across a wide-ranging repair network throughout Taiwan.

The Result

Our meticulous execution successfully transported all 26 oversized crates from Hamburg to Dammam, Saudi Arabia, within the transit time requirement. Despite the complexity of the freight operations, our dedicated team went through careful planning, precise coordination, and expert knowledge to ensure safe and timely delivery. Throughout the process, our logistical expertise, risk management, and effective communication were also critical to this mission.

At Morrison Express, we pride ourselves on delivering customized transportation solutions that exceed our clients’ expectations.
